running week 7 - the 10k #running

Img_1378

The 10k has been done! Clare and I managed it in 1 hour 18 mins 24 seconds. This was quite a bit slower than we'd hoped for, however, we were not prepared for the hills or the rain. I knew Crystal Palace park was on a hill, but I'd assumed the 10k would avoid the steepest parts. I was wrong and as it was a 2 lap course I just couldn't sustain running up the hills over the 2nd 5k. We decided that what we needed to do was "moonwalk" up the hills - a reference to our previous Walk the Walk Moonwalk Marathons and half Marathons. Once we worked out that strategy the hills were easier, but running up them at our usual pace was never going to happen.
I really enjoyed the 10k and whilst there weren't that many people taking part, it was nice to complete it and not be last. If it had been a sunny morning it may have been easier, (the rain and the muddy path up the hill at 2 and 6k were the worst element for me) and it would have been nice to compete (ahem) in a very full race. We've also raised nearly £250 which is fantastic and we have a few more promises of sponsorship to come.
I have in the 24 hours since the 10k been worried about my knees. In particular my right knee was swollen and red on Sunday and when I woke up on Monday. Now (late on Monday evening) it feels OK and it has been OK since about 2pm so I'm hoping it was nothing serious. I'm considering doing some swimming later in the week to ease myself back in to exercise, but I'll see how I I feel. Running wise I've sinned up for the Sport Relief 3 mile on the Embankment on 25th March. This is designed to motivate me to keep on running after this 10K and also as it's 5K which I can do fairly easily I'm hoping I won't cause me any issues. We shall see!

running week 6 #running

This week has been the last full week before the 10k happens. I'm a bit worried that I haven't really covered the distance and that it will be horrendous on the day. I have done my usual 3 runs but none of them more than 5k. I was in Scotland at the weekend and I went running along the shore in Troon. It was lovely to run with the sea on one side, but the wind was a major issue and running in to it slowed me down quite a lot. As it was also unfamiliar running territory the route I took was perhaps not the best one. I saw quite a few other people out running, but not along the route I took so perhaps I should have gone for a more sheltered route.

Update
It's now 2 days before the run and I'm looking forward to it. If you'd like to sponsor me please go to www.justgiving.com/clareandbecs10k

I'll post pictures and time and a race review on Sunday evening. Oh and one more thing - I've already signed up for my next race - a sport relief 3 mile run on March 26th.
