Tube WiFi
This morning I decided to go to work via Victoria. As I passed through the ticket barrier and headed towards the escalator I was confronted by a sign telling me that wifi was now available in the station. Being the geek that I am I immediately whipped out my iPhone, connected to the wifi and tried to update twitter. As I was on the escalator at the time I had to pay some attention to walking, but as soon as I got to the bottom I realised you have to "register". Pleasingly all this required was entering your email address (Free wifi that requires a full registration then a username and password entry annoys me so I'm glad that TFL and Virgin Media (the wifi provider in this case) have decided that just entering your email and ticking to accept Ts&Cs is enough) though by the time you've done this your train may well have come and the wifi is restricted to the stations. This isn't as bad as it sounds as you don't have to go through the registration each time you connect so my journeys today between Victoria and Kings Cross were punctuated by wifi signal good enough to refresh email, twitter or Facebook whilst in a station. This is a good thing as far as I am concerned and it's free for the whole summer of fun that 2012 will be. It's marketed as allowing you to check the travel updates and who knows, once the travel system fills up, if the signal will cope. We shall see.
