The House of Mirth
I haven't been doing a "Books I've Read" blog this year, however, I feel I want to write about the one I've just finished. Despite the title "The House of Mirth" is a rather sad story. Set in 1890s New York society it covers a couple of years in the life of Lily Bart, a lady who moves in the best social circles. The story follows her through scandal and missed opportunity. Her ostracisation from the social circles she's grown up in and her abandonment by the people she counted as her friends is rather frustrating from 2011. I just wanted to grab hold of them all and say "get over it". I didn't really find Lily to be a very sympathetic character until towards the end and the "I'm a lady so I don't know anything about business" routine grated. I'm not sure I'm clear why I wanted to write about it in particular, I think that perhaps even though it is set a long time ago the moral of the story applies today.
