Running

I have started running. I never used to be the type to do exercise at all. It is a standing joke at my parents that when I was younger I’d get up early just so I could have a lift to school rather than walk the half mile to the school. In the last few months I have however been inspired by a few people on twitter and facebook updating their run times. I started with a couch to 5k in 9 weeks course. I completed this – it did take me longer than 9 weeks as I am easily distracted – however I can now run 5k in about 40 mins which is something that I would have thought impossible once. I don’t find it easy and I woudn't exactly call it fun either. Getting out of the front door is a real challenge and keeping going to the end of the run is hard – because it would be so easy to just stop at any point on the route.

I am using nike+iPod to measure my runs and to keep me updated on how far I’ve gone/have got left to go. I don’t want to sound like an advert for nike – I am suspicious of their ethical record – however the nike+iPod system is fab. The other day I got a message from Lance Armstrong telling me I’d run further than I had before! It’s cheesy but the encouragement it provides really helps.

So the next move is to do a 10K run. I’ve signed up for it – on 17th October in Victoria Park in east London (I used to live near there so am pleased to be going back to my old manor). It is definitely helping having that in my sights – though some of the “beginner” training plans I’ve seen appear to be demanding 6k already from the start - and I’m not quite ready for that yet. I'm just going to keep plodding along until I can run non stop for 10k. I'm not planning on doing a marathon or anything. My goal is to be able to run properly and that's all. I think I will post a few notes here and there on my progress and maybe even a photograph when I complete the 10k.
